Lost In The World
‘Lost In The World’ delves into the interplay between human emotion and physicality. Inspired by a feeling of self-discovery, fragments of the human body collide on the canvas to create new forms that transcend the boundaries of identity, using the body as a language.
The works play with the fluidity of motion and stillness. This idea stems from Tomkins’ background as a dancer and choreographer. The figurative forms are deconstructed and reconstructed, echoing the dynamic quality of movement. The relationship of light and shadow further accentuates the forms, drawing the eye to the tension and release that exists within the composition.
Tomkins is interested in how an image interacts with gestural manipulation. Through a process of addition and subtraction the works arrive at a contemplative state. This tension is further explored through the contrast between expressive painting and the precise, mechanical nature of silkscreen printing. By integrating and reimagining found images, they prompt introspection about one's own emotional landscapes.
The figures gaze away from the viewer, creating a palpable distance that evokes longing and alienation - a deliberate choice to compel us to look inwards toward our own experiences and prompt introspection. Each work is a mirror, reflecting not only the figures within, but also conversation with the self.
