Lynette Fisher

Lynette Fisher (Te Puna, Tauranga) art practice encompasses painting, printmaking, drawing and assemblage and regularly exhibits in solo and group shows throughout Aotearoa New Zealand.

"Currently I am painting with acrylic on linen with found fabrics which I use to explore themes of adoption, guardianship and belonging by recontextualizing familiar imagery. Though my work often carries a nostalgic undertone, I introduce tensions that question the conventional understanding of time and identity, especially as they relate to maternal lineage."

Lynette Fisher response to the theme of Artistic Passport is through the lens of an adopted person.

"Historically via adoption, lineage and culture is placed and replaced without regard. This has evolved into my work acknowledging the individuals who live within the “other” space without claim to blood, land or water.

When we end up in a place what do we choose to bring? What have we been handed down? What do we leave behind, give away, or jettison from our lives? Innate memories travel with us beyond our consciousness and simple acts can transcend place and culture.

Using the seemingly unrelated elements of a time-honored coding system, the nostalgia of creating a daisy chain and a child’s game of ‘Whispers’, recognisable imagery is reinterpreted into agreed narratives."

5 MINUTES - 5 QUESTIONS - 5 ANSWERS

Do you have a favourite colour?
Yes, my favourite colour has always been yellow ever since I can remember.

How do you take your coffee?
Long black

Is there something you can’t live without in your studio?
So many things! My favourite wide flat paintbrush, a sharp scalpel, stretching pliers  -  I get very twitchy if anyone messes with my toolbox. I also love my wooden plan drawers that serve as a workbench and hide all manner of things.

Who is your favourite artist of all time + now? Why?
I prefer artists that paint with pure emotion like Tracey Emin, Louise Bourgeois, Mark Rothko and Ralph Hōtere.
I love painters like Seraphine Pick and Star Gossage for their palette and mark making. If I could have a work by anyone currently it would be a massive Tracy Emin or James Drinkwater.
